Vestment Clergy

Posted by admin in Religion

Vestment Clergy
Do you prefer Churches where clergy wear traditional, antiquated vestments, or modern business suits?

There are many, many protestant Churches where the Minsters and Priests wear traditional vestments. And there are many other protestant Churches where the ministers wear modern business suits.

Do you have a preference?
I prefer traditional vestments and I also prefer a more antiquated style of service. When I attend Church (which is every Sunday) I like to feel like I am leaving the secular world and going to a place that has its links to events of eons ago.

But that’s just me…

I prefer the Eastern Orthodox Church, the oldest, original and true church.

Example.

Clergy Killers

Clergy Killers

$18.98

Some conflict is normal, even in the church, but Lloyd Rediger argues that there are some conflicts which are not normal, and are in fact abusive. Some churches have "clergy killer" congregations, energized by evil and mentally ill personalities in their midst. Even the clergy may become "killer clergy" if their status or interactions encourage them to act abusively toward church staff, or to be exempt from justice. Clergy Killers presents research to substantiate the alarming rate of abused and fired pastors. It indicates why these conflicts occur while also presenting methods for resolving them. Strategies to prevent abuse, to bring support to clergy, and to build healthier congregations are also included.

But when Sam answered her door early the next morning and greeted the biggest gossip in town, Deborah found herself in hot water with her congregation. She never imagined soon after she would be flying cross country with Sam and broadening her horizons by visiting a nudist beach, learning the paths of ants, and falling in love. But there were still her life and vocation at home to consider. Ministers don’t believe in Prince Charming, don’t wear brightly-colored lipstick, and certainly don’t steal kisses in the church pantry Can Sam Perry convince the Reverend that even a woman of the cloth can have happily ever after?

Jane Austen and the Clergy

Jane Austen and the Clergy

$62.5

Jane Austen was the daughter of a clergyman, the sister of two others and the cousin of four more. Her principal acquaintances were clergymen and their families, whose social, intellectual and religious attitudes she shared. Yet while clergymen feature in all her novels, often in major roles, there has been little recognition of their significance. To many readers their status and profession is a mystery, as they appear simply to be a sub-species of gentlemen and never seem to perform any duties. Mr Collins in "Pride and Prejudice" is often regarded as little more than a figure of fun. This work demonstrates the importance of Jane Austen's clerical background in explaining the clergy in her novels, whether Mr Tilney in "Northanger Abbey", Mr Elton in "Emma", or a less prominent character such as Dr Grant in "Mansfield Park".In the book, the author draws on a range of knowledge of the literature and history of the period to describe who the clergy were, both in the novels and in life: how they were educated and appointed; the houses they lived in and the gardens they designed and cultivated; the women they married; their professional and social context; their income, their duties, their moral outlook and their beliefs. The discussion uses the facts of Jane Austen's life and the evidence contained in her letters and novels to give a portrait of the contemporary clergy.

Understanding Clergy Misconduct in Religious Systems

Understanding Clergy Misconduct in Religious Systems

$32.5

“In Understanding Clergy Misconduct in Religious Systems, you’ll take an incisive look at why sexual misconduct occurs in religious systems and how to implement proactive strategies for holistic change. Applicable to both Jewish and Christian communities, this illuminating exploration takes a look at the psychology behind scapegoating, why it is perpetuated, and how you can quell the damaging tradition of silence.Understanding Clergy Misconduct in Religious Systems helps you see leaders of religious institutions in a way that the world has been afraid to see them–in a glass clearly. Enriched with metaphoric myths and fairy tales instead of technical jargon, its unique systemic perspective reveals the psychodynamics behind the obsession with family secrets and lets you understand this dysfunction from the perspectives of victim, abuser, and counselor. These specific areas will both inform and aid you in dealing with this difficult subject: >the religious institution as a family system>the religious system as an illusion of the perfect family>the concept of God-transference and the overidealization of clergy>clergy personal relationships and clergy congregational relationships>vulnerability and the psychology of the victim>strategies for healing dysfunctional religious systems Understanding Clergy Misconduct in Religious Systems comes at just the right time–in an era when little has been written on the subject, especially from a systemic perspective, this work comes at a time when the phenomena of clergy sexual misconduct has rocked the very foundation of religious systems worldwide. Whether you’re a lay congregational leader, judicatory administrator, pastoral counselor, psychologist, or seminarian, you’ll find that the coping strategies and intervention techniques it outlines will guide you in pinpointing the sickness at its source and restoring felicity and order to your religious leaders and their communities.”

The Political World of the Clergy

The Political World of the Clergy

$107.98

This study examines the role of religion in American politics. It begins with the assumption that there exist multiple democratic theories, and that religion has a different role to play in each. It compares consensus theories of American political culture, and dualistic theories of political mobilization, and accounts, which emphasize the diversity of the American citizenry. The question of how religious leaders view their political roles is of the work’s focus. The major part of the study consists of interviews with nearly thirty Protestant ministers and Roman Catholic clergy concerning their conceptions of the relationship between the sacred and the political. These conceptions are then related to the various theories of democratic political culture, with the conclusion that each of three traditions (Roman Catholicism, mainline Protestantism, and Evangelical Protestantism) embodies to some extent one of the models of democratic politics. This work will be of interest to scholars and students of American politics, government, and religion.

The Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis

The Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis

$26.95

The story of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests has sent shock waves around the nation and will not fade from consciousness or the news. We ask, "How could this happen?" And then we ask, "How could the Catholic Church let this continue for so long—in seeming silence and duplicity?" Paul R. Dokecki, a community psychologist at Vanderbilt University, an active Catholic, and a former board member of the National Catholic Education Association, investigates the crisis not only with the eye of an investigative reporter, but with the analytical skills and training of a psychologist as well. Moreover, he lays the foundation for reasonable and practical reform measures.Through the scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston as well as the earlier, if less well known but momentous, case in the Diocese of Nashville, Dokecki reports on and analyzes what is ultimately an abuse of power—not only by the clergy but by church officials. As distasteful as these instances may be, they are compelling reading, enlightened by the author's abilities to contextualize these events through the lenses of professional ethics, the human sciences, and ecclesiology. According to Dokecki, these and other instances of clergy sexual abuse reveal a systemic deficiency in the structure and the nature of the church itself, one that has prevented the church from adequately dealing with its own worst sins.Dokecki may shine a spotlight into the church's dark corners—but he does so in the service of enlightenment, calling the church back toward the vision of Vatican II and the spirit of Pope John XXIII—toward a greater transparency, a more open and participatory governance in the church, and for a greatly expanded role for the people of God who make up the church. It is in this way, Dokecki believes, the church will be better able to keep the innocent children of the church safe from harm.

Beyond the Scandals: A Guide to Healthy Sexuality for Clergy

Beyond the Scandals: A Guide to Healthy Sexuality for Clergy

$24.98

Recent sexual scandals have rocked the North American religious scene and left the churches concerned about credibility and liability. What are the bounds of clergy sexuality? What constitutes misconduct, and what legal, moral, and religious norms apply? More broadly, what has gone wrong, and how can clergy understand their own sexuality and their lives of service? Lloyd Rediger is a uniquely qualified national expert on all these questions with a strong message for clergy about their sexuality, spirituality, and behavior. In this timely volume, which incorporates material from his earlier volume Ministry and Sexuality, Rediger brings his extensive research, clinical experience, and theological insights to bear on the topic. He offers a comprehensive, authoritative account of clergy sexuality and sexual ethics with up-to-date legal information; helpful research on ethnic, gender, and denominational factors; a religious and moral framework for understanding clergy sexuality; and analysis of the sexual problems encountered by clergy. (Learn more about Dr. Rediger at his website.) This volume could well become the standard pro-fessional resource for clergy in a new era of increased accountability and moral reflection.

God's Ambassadors: A History of the Christian Clergy in America

God’s Ambassadors: A History of the Christian Clergy in America

$30

“In God’s Ambassadors E. Brooks Holifield masterfully traces the history of America’s Christian clergy from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, analyzing the changes in practice and authority that have transformed the clerical profession. >Challenging one-sided depictions of decline in clerical authority, Holifield locates the complex story of the clergy within the context not only of changing theologies but also of transitions in American culture and society. The result is a thorough social history of the profession that also takes seriously the theological presuppositions that have informed clerical activity. With alternating chapters on Protestant and Catholic clergy, the book permits sustained comparisons between the two dominant Christian traditions in American history. >At the same time, God’s Ambassadors depicts a vocation that has remained deeply ambivalent regarding the professional status marking the other traditional learned callings in the American workplace. Changing expectations about clerical education, as well as enduring theological questions, have engendered a debate about the professional ideal that has distinguished the clerical vocation from such fields as law and medicine. >The American clergy from the past four centuries constitute a colorful, diverse cast of characters who have, in ways both obvious and obscure, helped to shape the tone of American culture. For a well-rounded narrative of their story told by a master historian, God’s Ambassadors is the book to read.”

The following circumstances whereby he was enabled to bo extensively useful, are remarkable.? Attending the feast of the sons of the clergy at St. Paul’s cathedral, a gentleman who was unknown to him came to him and asked his name, to whom he modestly answered, "My name, sir, is William Law." Whereupon the gentleman gave him a letter directed to our author himself, which he, for the present, put into his pocket, and which, upon opening it at a convenient opportunity, he found enclosed a bank note for one thousand pounds sterling; and at another time a bank note for five hundred pounds sterling, was sent him from an unknown hand. The pious and catholic Doddridge, in a sermon to young persons, has the following passage concerning William Law. ‘ It is an awakening saying of one of the most lively and pathetic, as well as most pious, .writers which our age has produced, ”that the condition of man in his natural state, seems to be like that of a person sick of a variety of diseases, knowing neither his distemper nor cure, but unhappily enclosed in a place where he could hear, or see, or taste, or feel nothing, but what tended to inflame his disorder." Betrayal of Trust: Confronting and Preventing Clergy Sexual Misconduct

Betrayal of Trust: Confronting and Preventing Clergy Sexual Misconduct

$20

“Sexual misconduct by clergy is a devastating issue that reaches across all denominations, damaging the credibility of the church in its wake. The media regularly reports on the moral failure of leaders and abuse at the hands of those who are supposed to be trustworthy. Betrayal of Trust focuses on a common scenario of abuse–sexual involvement between a male pastor and a female congregant–and offers practical solutions on how to respond to and prevent this betrayal of trust. This book presents methods that will help churches respond sensitively to victims and implement policies and procedures to prevent abuse from taking place. For clergy who may be at risk for this behavior, it offers help in establishing appropriate boundaries. This second edition includes a new chapter that offers help for the wandering pastor and a risk-determination questionnaire for pastors who may become abusers.”

Witness: Gay and Lesbian Clergy Report from the Front

Witness: Gay and Lesbian Clergy Report from the Front

$4.48

Based on interviews with more than a hundred gay and lesbian clergy, Dann Hazel constructs a mosaic depicting the ministry of gays and lesbians across the denominational spectrum. Hazel’s subjects describe the personal challenges faced by gay and lesbian clergy, their efforts to do constructive work in theology in order to build faith communities where gay men and lesbians can flourish spiritually, and the growth of congregations led by gays and lesbians in various denominations. The book concludes with predictions about the future shape of mainline churches, many of which are currently riven by the issue of gay and lesbian ministry. These first-person accounts of despair, triumph, wrenching debates within both congregations and entire church polities, and the geneses of new churches make for powerful reading.

Vita Communis: The Common Life of the Secular Clergy

Vita Communis: The Common Life of the Secular Clergy

$32.98

Vita Communis – ‘the common life’ – is the term used for community life among priests and other clerics, as opposed to monks and friars. While monasticism is familiar, few are aware that pastoral (‘secular’) priests have lived in communities for most of the Church’s history. Many people have suggested that they could do so again, and that this might help with some of the problems facing solitary priests in the modern world. By exploring what was done in the past, we can suggest what might work in the future, learning from the successes as well as the failures of previous priestly communities. The story of secular canons in the Western Church, as opposed to those who were canons in religious orders, has often been told in terms of their contribution to architecture, literature, and the apostolate. Here, however, the author, building on his earlier work devoted to the medieval rules governing the secular common life, has provided a narrative of the essential shape of the canonical life from its origins down to the present time, and this for a general readership. He thus demonstrates the persistent desire of many secular clergy to live in community. At a time when priests are fewer and more isolated, this work will provide useful models for developing structures of mutual support for the secular clergy of our time. Abbot Geoffrey Scott

Understanding the Impact of Clergy Sexual Abuse: Betrayal and Recovery

Understanding the Impact of Clergy Sexual Abuse: Betrayal and Recovery

$53.48

The sexual exploitation of a child by one who has been recognized as a representative of God is a sinister assault on that person’s psychosocial and spiritual well-being. Many survivors of such abuse present with a range of symptoms consistent with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder as well as common co-occurring problems, including substance abuse, affective lability, and relational conflicts. Yet there are additional themes, particularly the impact of the abuse and institutional betrayal on the family, profound alteration in individual spirituality, and changes in individual and family religious practices, which differentiate this abuse from other traumas. Understanding the profound and multidimensional effects of clergy perpetrated sexual abuse and the betrayal of trust by religious leaders on individuals, families and communities requires the collective wisdom of many voices. This book brings together the perspectives of survivors, practitioners and scholars to examine this unique form of interpersonal violence from theoretical, clinical and spiritual perspectives with consideration given to future research needs. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Child Sex Abuse.

Hearing God's Call: Ways of Discernment for Laity and Clergy

Hearing God’s Call: Ways of Discernment for Laity and Clergy

$18

“How can one discern if a calling truly is from God? How can one be alert to the fact that one call is ending and another is beginning? In this insightful book Ben Campbell Johnson gives inspiring, experience-based advice on these and other questions concerning the call of God. Johnson begins by relating several stories of both laypersons and clergy who have experienced God’s call. He does so in order to underscore two significant points: God is still calling believers today, just as he did in earlier times, and God’s empowering call extends to clergy and laity alike. In the rest of the book Johnson explores various aspects of the call, offering spiritually wise observations on how best to discern and respond to the voice of God. Although Hearing God’s Call is about a serious spiritual subject, Johnson never discusses it in a vague or nebulous fashion but always anchors it in instructive particulars. He uses numerous relevant anecdotes to illustrate his principal points, and he provides a thoughtful series of discernment exercises at the end of each chapter. The book concludes with an appendix that examines prominent biblical figures who experienced God’s call, including Peter, Paul, John the Baptist, and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Filled with rich spiritual insights, many inspirational stories, and much practical advice, this book will help anyone seeking to hear God’s call with greater clarity and act on it with greater conviction.”

How The Clinton Clergy Corrupted A President

How The Clinton Clergy Corrupted A President

$11.99

“He was a bright young boy who walked a mile to church every Sunday, until ministers turned him into moral tragedy.Throughout the Clinton administration we have been bombarded with scandalous reports of adultery and infidelity, yet it never fails that in Monday morning’s newspaper, we can almost always see a picture of the president and his wife walking out of church, Bible in hand. The secular population may find this endearing and may say, “He goes to church; he can’t be that bad,” while the conservative Christians cry, “Hypocrite!”In light of these shameful trysts, we seem to be on the receiving end of a double message. On one hand, Bill Clinton obviously goes to church. On the other hand, Bill Clinton has also come dangerously close to losing his job while disgracing the White House and the American people with his sexual liaisons. There has to be more to this story than what we have and seen thus far. We can’t label Bill Clinton as a hopeless case, because none of us are. His sexual misbehavior is only symptomatic of a much greater problem. Moody Adams has done an effective job in uncovering and exposing the root of Clinton’s problem: Sin!In addition, Adams has done a tremendous amount of research, presenting the facts in black and white, while leaving out any presuppositions he may have about Clinton. This work is not a defense of Bill’s Clinton’s actions. There is a message of greater importance screaming from these pages!Bill Clinton, along with everybody else who sits under the preaching Word of God has a major responsibility to compare the fallible “spoken word” with that of the infallible “written Word” and conform his behavior to it.”

A Republic of Righteousness: The Public Christianity of the Post-Revolutionary New England Clergy

$71.98

This book examines the debate over the connection between religion and public life in society during the fifty years following the American Revolution. Sassi challenges the conventional wisdom, finding an essential continuity to the period’s public Christianity, whereas most previous studies have seen this period as one in which the nation’s cultural paradigm shifted from republicanism to liberal individualism. Focusing on the Congregational clergy of New England, he demonstrates that throughout this period there were Americans concerned with their corporate destiny, retaining a commitment to constructing a righteous community and assessing the cosmic meaning of the American experiment.

The Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis: Reform and Renewal in the Catholic Community

The Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis: Reform and Renewal in the Catholic Community

$29.95

“The story of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests has sent shock waves around the nation and will not fade from consciousness or the news. We ask, “How could this happen?” And then we ask, “How could the Catholic Church let this continue for so long — in seeming silence and duplicity?” Paul R. Dokecki, a community psychologist at Vanderbilt University, an active Catholic, and a former board member of the National Catholic Education Association, investigates the crisis not only with the eye of an investigative reporter, but with the analytical skills and training of a psychologist as well. Moreover, he lays the foundation for reasonable and practical reform measures.Through the scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston as well as the earlier, if less well known but momentous, case in the Diocese of Nashville, Dokecki reports on and analyzes what is ultimately an abuse of power — not only by the clergy but by church officials. As distasteful as these instances may be, they are compelling reading, enlightened by the author’s abilities to contextualize these events through the lenses of professional ethics, the human sciences, and ecclesiology. According to Dokecki, these and other instances of clergy sexual abuse reveal a systemic deficiency in the structure and the nature of the church itself, one that has prevented the church from adequately dealing with its own worst sins.Dokecki may shine a spotlight into the church’s dark corners — but he does so in the service of enlightenment, calling the church back toward the vision of Vatican II and the spirit of Pope John XXIII — toward a greater transparency, a more open and participatory governance in the church, and for a greatlyexpanded role for the people of God who make up the church. It is in this way, Dokecki believes, the church will be better able to keep the innocent children of the church safe from harm.”

Holding Bishops Accountable: How Lawsuits Helped the Catholic Church Confront Clergy Sexual Abuse

Holding Bishops Accountable: How Lawsuits Helped the Catholic Church Confront Clergy Sexual Abuse

$23.48

The sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy is arguably the most acute crisis Catholicism has faced since the Reformation. The prevalence of clergy sexual abuse and its shocking cover-up by church officials have obscured the largely untold story of the tort system’s remarkable success in bringing the scandal to light, focusing attention on the need for institutional reform, and spurring church leaders and public officials into action. Stories of the tort system as an engine of social justice are rare. "Holding Bishops Accountable" tells one such story by revealing how pleadings, discovery documents, and depositions fueled media coverage of the scandal. Timothy Lytton shows how the litigation strategy of plaintiffs’ lawyers gave rise to a widespread belief that the real problem was not the actions of individual priests but rather the church’s massive institutional failure. The book documents how church and government policymakers responded to the problem of clergy sexual abuse only under the pressure of private lawsuits. As Lytton deftly demonstrates, the lessons of clergy sexual abuse litigation give us reason to reconsider the case for tort reform and to look more closely at how tort litigation can enhance the performance of public and private policymaking institutions.

God, Britain, and Hitler in World War II: The View of the British Clergy, 1939-1945

God, Britain, and Hitler in World War II: The View of the British Clergy, 1939-1945

$124.98

Many Britains had distinct religious or theological interpretations of World War II. They viewed Fascism, especially the German National Socialism, as a form of modern paganism, a repulsive worship of Leader, Race, and State–a form of idolatry. However, for the most part, British clerics did not defend the war as a simple matter of Christian Britain versus Pagan Germany, because they saw only too well the pagan elements in British culture. Instead, the clergy defended the war as a defense of "Christian civilization," a particular religious culture that had grown up under the aegis of the Christian faith. Fascism had, in the opinion of many, family similarities to Liberal Humanism. Nazism was abusing the Scripture because everyone had allowed a liberal hermeneutic to slip into their thinking theologically. Naturally, the clerics view of the war as "just" meant that pacifism was wrong-headed, but they refused to demonize pacifists or to hound them into arrest. The clergymen did maintain that Liberal Humanism issued logically in pacifism and pacifism had weakened the national will, allowing it to make shameful concessions to the Fascist dictators throughout the 1930s. This study will also help explain the surprising Labor Party victory in the summer of 1945.

Pious Persuasions: Laity and Clergy in Eighteenth-Century New England

Pious Persuasions: Laity and Clergy in Eighteenth-Century New England

$5.98

Congregational ministers in early New England worked hard to advance the cause of orthodox religion among the region’s laypeople, but the people’s willingness to voice differences with their ministers persisted. By the time of the Revolutionary War, New Englanders had established a strong tradition of independent-mindedness, shaped in part by the previous century’s struggles over piety and religious practice. In Pious Persuasions: Laity and Clergy in Eighteenth-Century New England, historian Erik R. Seeman explores both Congregational doctrine and laypeople’s practices throughout the 1700s. Seeman looks at the piety of ordinary folk, including a Boston housewright; the interplay of magic and religious culture; the changing experience of women; and the persistence of revivalism. His findings supply a fresh perspective on the Great Awakening of the 1740s, which appears not as a historical turning point but rather as one of four major revivals that fostered communal piety. Seeman further examines how pastors and parishioners negotiated their increasingly contentious religious culture when participating in highly charged events: deathbed scenes, rituals of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, and religious revivals. Incorporating the widest ranging examination to date of contemporary lay sources — letters, diaries, conversion narratives, and published poems and broadsides — Pious Persuasions is a significant work for Early Americanists, social historians, and students of American religion.

Priests in Love: Roman Catholic Clergy and Their Intimate Friendships

Priests in Love: Roman Catholic Clergy and Their Intimate Friendships

$20.48

In the 1960s and ’70s, thousands of Roman Catholic priests left the active ministry to get married. Nothing like this had been seen on this scale since the French Revolution, and before that since the Reformation. Now a different phenomenon seems to be at work: priests who have formed long-time, intimate sexual friendships. These men are not pedophiles or sexual abusers. They are adult, mature men who can no longer find a rationale for a life of obligatory celibacy and enter into responsible sexual relationships. Some of them are straight, some gay. Based on interviews, conducted over a nine-year period, with 50 Australian priests, Priests in Love tells the stories of these priests and their friends. It deals with the moral, psychological, and social challenges they face on the less traveled road of social change. >

Instead, it is a reality check replete with real case studies that reintroduce the human element to a discussion so often detached from the very people it claims to concern. / In part 1 Orr explains the ethical and theological foundations of contemporary clinical ethics. Parts 2, 3, and 4 focus on specific ethical dilemmas. Here Orr tackles such questions as What management options are available when the family of a patient who is brain dead is unwilling to accept the diagnosis? Is a feeding tube ethically obligatory for a patient with advanced dementia? Is it ethically permissible to continue to prescribe narcotics for a patient who admits to their misuse? Should we provide organ transplantation for an undocumented foreign national? / Finally, part 5 explores ways that family members, clergy, counselors, and friends can assist patients and families as they struggle with these difficult decisions, emphasizing the priesthood of believers and the importance of prayer for Gods wisdom and peace. / Medical Ethics and the Faith Factor is a timely entry into a growing ethical discussion. Readers of this book will come away with a greater familiarity with clinical issues, a recognition of the moral questions raised by those issues including those of religion and culture and the ability to render more thoughtful assistance to patients and families struggling to find answers.

Clergy Burnout: Recovering from the 70-Hour Work Week… and Other Self-Defeating Practices

$19

“In this highly accessible book, Fred Lehr clarifies the nature and practice of clergy codependence. In short, insightful, and highly readable chapters, filled with many examples and stories from his own life and those he has counseled, Lehr identifies the typical forms codependence takes in the life and ministry of clergy: the chief-enabler, the one who keeps things functioning; the scapegoat, the one on whom everything’s blamed when it goes wrong, the one who’s responsible; the hero, the example, the pure and righteous one; the lost child, the one no one really knows or cares about; the rescuer, the one who saves the day, makes the visit, fixes the problem, makes everything all right again; the mascot, the cheerleader, the one who offers comic relief, brings down the tension level after a heated discussion.”

The Hidden History of Women’s Ordination : Female Clergy in the Medieval West  – Book

The Roman Catholic leadership still refuses to ordain women officially or even to recognize that women are capable of ordination. But is the widely held assumption that women have always been excluded from such roles historically accurate? In the early centuries of Christianity, ordination was the process and the ceremony by which one moved to any new ministry (ordo) in the community. By this definition, women were in fact ordained into several ministries. A radical change in the definition of ordination during the eleventh and twelfth centuries not only removed women from the ordained minist

The Hidden History of Women's Ordination: Female Clergy in the Medieval West

The Hidden History of Women’s Ordination: Female Clergy in the Medieval West

$32.98

The Roman Catholic leadership still refuses to ordain women officially or even to recognize that women are capable of ordination. But is the widely held assumption that women have always been excluded from such roles historically accurate? In the early centuries of Christianity, ordination was the process and the ceremony by which one moved to any new ministry (ordo) in the community. By this definition, women were in fact ordained into several ministries. A radical change in the definition of ordination during the eleventh and twelfth centuries not only removed women from the ordained ministry, but also attempted to eradicate any memory of women’s ordination in the past. The debate that accompanied this change has left its mark in the literature of the time. However, the triumph of a new definition of ordination as the bestowal of power, particularly the power to confect the Eucharist, so thoroughly dominated western thought and practice by the thirteenth century that the earlier concept of ordination was almost completely erased. The ordination of women, either in the present or in the past, became unthinkable. References to the ordination of women exist in papal, episcopal and theological documents of the time, and the rites for these ordinations have survived. Yet, many scholars still hold that women, particularly in the western church, were never "really" ordained. A survey of the literature reveals that most scholars use a definition of ordination that would have been unknown in the early middle ages. Thus, the modern determination that women were never ordained, Macy argues, is a premise based on false terms. Not a work of advocacy, this important book applies indispensable historical background for the ongoing debate about women’s ordination.

Godly Clergy in Early Stuart England: The Caroline Puritan Movement, 1620-1643

$60.98

Religion, and Puritanism in particular, was a crucially important influence in seventeenth-century England. This book attempts to trace the way in which Puritan clergymen saw themselves and the world in which they lived. It discusses the changes they wanted to make to the Church of England in terms of services and in terms of how they wanted to replace bishops. By looking at such matters through the networks of friendship and alliances made by the ministers, a new picture emerges of the role played by Puritans in the decades leading up to the English Civil War.

Help for Clergy Wives - How to Please Without Being a Pleaser

Help for Clergy Wives – How to Please Without Being a Pleaser

$14.48

Patricia Cummings’ response to her husband’s call into the ministry was basically, "Me, a minister’s wife What is God thinking?" She says that she knew it was going to be hard, but she didn’t know how hard. Through his years as a solo pastor at the Pebble Creek Community Church in Goodyear, Arizona, she learned ways to meet this challenge, which she openly shares in this book. She admits that her main problem was being a "people pleaser," and so she searched for ways to practice being a God-pleaser instead. This book contains suggestions on: Honing your hospitality and etiquette skills Money management Support systems Setting personal boundaries Making time for fun Handling unrealistic expectations How to say "no " Assessing giftedness and preferences. . . . . .and much more. Each chapter ends with a suggested prayer or exercise. It is obvious that the writer has a heart for pastors’ wives. She has written a book aimed at helping women with this calling to learn how best to care for themselves – body, mind and spirit.

Excerpt from book: INTRODUCTION. if any one were to ask us the motive of this publication, we would fain answer him by quoting the first words of the preface of one of the works of Father Nouet: "My dear reader, if you are a man of prayer, return thanks to God for this priceless favor; if you are not yet such an one, labor immediately to obtain this great grace." We shall not repeat to our venerable brother priests what they have so often read and heard concerning the importance of meditation. When there is question of the members of the sacerdotal tribe, it may be said to be, not important merely, but necessary. "Meditation," says Rupert (Lib. 2, in Lev., c. 11), "is recommended to all Christians, but it is commanded to the priests, who, in virtue of their state, are obliged to, and aim at, a high perfection." It is certain, as a rule, that spiritual life is impossible without mental prayer. We shall content ourselves with some short reflections regarding the esteem we should have for this exercise, before we go on to show the plan of this work and the method of meditation we have thought best to adopt. NECESSITY OF MEDITATION FOR THE PRIEST. The immense interests which are connected with the sanctifi- cation of the clergy absolutely require us to be assiduous in meditating the laws of the Lord, as the Church asked it for us in the ceremony of our consecration: Ut in lege tua die ac node medi- tantes . . . quod crediderint doceant, quod docuerint imitentur. (Pont.) When, in fact, we have priests who have been sanctified, according to the prayer which Jesus Christ addressed for them to His Father, "Sanctifica eos in veritate," and who have become able through their eminent virtue worthily to accomplish their heavenly vocation, it may be said that error is opposed with success, th…

$14.95

“One of the most important psychological studies of the late twentieth century, “On Death and Dying” grew out of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’s famous interdisciplinary seminar on death, life, and transition. In this remarkable book, Dr. Kubler-Ross first explored the now-famous five stages of death: denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Through sample interviews and conversations, she gives the reader a better understanding of how imminent death affects the patient, the professionals who serve that patient, and the patient’s family, bringing hope to all who are involved.”

Sexuality and Catholicism offers a concise and well-rounded analysis of all the most important and most widely discussed issues concerning sexuality and Roman Catholicism. The theme of this volume — the sin of sexuality — is as old as the creation story and as new as the Vatican’s reassertion that divorced and remarried Catholics must choose between the sacraments and having sex in marriage. A daily presence in the news, this highly controversial subject affects millions within the church and millions more who look to the church for moral guidance.
